Shelfmark

MS. Firth c. 9

Summary

'Ambassade de M. de la Boderie en Angleterre': the diplomatic correspondence of Antoine Lefebvre, sieur de la Boderie, French ambassador at the court of Great Britain, April 1606-January 1610/1: apparently, like Brit. Mus. Add. MSS. 30642-4, copied from the contemporary transcripts in the Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris), MSS. nouv. acquis. 7013-5 (formerly Fonds Brienne 42-4).

Almost the whole of the correspondence was published, from the Fonds Brienne or from this or another transcript, in 1750, under the title of Ambassades de Monsieur de la Boderie en Angleterre sous le règne d'Henri IV et la minorité de Louis XIII (5 vols. 8vo). Each volume is preceded by a key to the cyphers employed.

De la Boderie's dispatches, principally addressed to Nicholas de Neufville, seigneur de Villeroy; his other correspondents being king Henri IV, queen Marie of France, Pierre Brulart marquis de Puisieux, and president Pierre Jeannin: a duplicate of nos. 10531-2, and written by the same scribe. The originals of most of the dispatches are in the Bibliothèque Nationale, MSS. Fonds Français 15984-5.

A list of the whole is given by m. Armand Baschet in the 39th Report of the Deputy Keeper of Public Records, appendix, pp. 650-4, and their contents are calendared in vols. 6-7 of E. Edwards' MS. calendar of the Carte Papers kept in the library. The transcripts and printed edition agree in omitting the dispatches of m. de la Boderie's secretary covering the period of the ambassador's absence from England.
