Summary

Folder A.3.1: Correspondence exchanged with parents, 1931-1943. Includes letters and press-cuttings regarding Coulson's visit to USA to lecture on pacifism, 1937, and some early photographs of Coulsons's parents, 1905-1906.

Folder A.3.2: Correspondence exchanged with twin brother, John Metcalfe Coulson, 1934-1970. Coulson's letter of 27 October 1935 contains a spirited account of the incident when he gave up the set of rooms allotted to, and furnished by, him in Trinity to A.E. Housman, who had reluctantly accepted his doctor's advice to move into ground-floor rooms because of his heart condition. Housman occupied the rooms until his death in April 1936, but Coulson declined the offer to move back into them because the alterations made to accommodate Housman had made them less attractive to him. The folder includes a small amount of correspondence with other relatives and friends.

Folder A.3.3: Miscellaneous correspondence of biographical interest, 1933-1938. Includes:

Two letters from A.E. Housman, December 1935, regarding his occupation of Coulson's allotted rooms in Trinity.

Correspondence with Fellows of Trinity regarding this incident.

Correspondence with R.H. Fowler regarding Coulson's deferred doctorate, November 1936.

Letter from J.E. Lennard-Jones regarding Coulson's career, February 1937.

Short notes from J.J. Thomson and G.F.C. Searle.

Correspondence regarding arrangements organised by Coulson for elocution classes for local Methodist preachers.

Correspondence with W.R. Dean, 1932, 1936.

Letters from Patrick Duff (1935) and H.S.M. Coxeter (1932, offering Coulson his rooms and furniture in Trinity).

Correspondence regarding pupils at Cambridge.

Enquiry by Coulson regarding External Ph.D. at London (before award of Prize Fellowship at Trinity), 1933.

Letter from C to Junior Bursar, Trinity College, expressing the wish that the 'bedders' for him and D.E. Lea might be excused their duties over Good Friday and Easter Monday, and allowed a holiday, 1934.

Letter from Charles Raven regretting that a visit to Ireland would prevent him from solemnising the marriage of Charles and Eileen Coulson, 1938.

Folder A.3.4: Miscellaneous correspondence and accounts regarding purchase of books, furniture, etc. for Coulson's rooms in Trinity College, 1934-1935.

Folder A.3.5: Correspondence with Deans, Bursars, etc. of various Cambridge Colleges regarding Coulson's scheme for helping unemployed men by training them as guides to the colleges, 1933.

Folder A.3.6: Coulson's appearance before Conscientious Objectors Tribunal, 1939-1940. Includes:

Official documents regarding registration as Conscientious Objector, and arrangements for Tribunal, with Coulson's statement of his beliefs, August 1940.

Similar statements of belief, and correspondence from G.S. Rushbrooke and others.

Related press-cuttings and printed matter.

Folder also includes correspondence with J.E. Lennard-Jones offering Coulson a place in his wartime group, which Coulson declined on conscientious grounds, 1939.

Folder A.3.7: Miscellaneous correspondence, 1933-1954. Folder includes letters on personal, scientific, and religious matters, some relatively trivial, others of biographical interest.

Folder A.3.8: Correspondence with Secretary, China Christian Universities Association, regarding invitation to Coulson to teach at Yenching University (Coulson declined because of his commitments at King's College, London), 1947.

Folder A.3.9: Miscellaneous domestic correspondence, 1950-1960.
