Red, buff, black and green initials with flourishes, some of which are in the shape of human and animal faces

Provenance

Roger de Conway , 14th century, second half. ‘Iste est liber Fratris Rogeri de Conewey et est Pannormia Ivonis Carnotensis continens libros octo’(fol.99v). Roger de Conway was 22nd Minister of the Franciscan Province of England (cf. A. G. Little, Grey Friars in Oxford, p.239).

Chester, Cheshire, Franciscan convent (?) : inscription "Iste ... Conewey" in same form as in Gray's Inn MS. 1, which with MSS. 5 and 12, were given by R. Conway, 22nd Provincial Minister, to the Chester convent. Corway was of the Worcester custody. (MLGB3: evidence from an inscription of ownership by an individual member of a religious house (which may not, however, be evidence for institutional ownership)).

Prob. no. 29 in the collection of 'Henry' [recte John (?)] Langley (Cat. codd. MSS. Angliae et Hiberniae (1697), II no. 6982)
