Summary

A collection bound for F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who wrote his name on fol. 1. All the compositions edited by him for Coventry and Hollier, subsequently published by Breitkopf & Härtel, are included. A thematic index on fol. 1 is in the hand of Fr. Knuth. It includes only the contents of fols. 2-60 and 108-end.

1-4: Preludes and fugues copied by Fanny Hensel. Nos. 3 and 4 are marked 'done'.

2. (fols. 7-8) 578. 'J. [S. B.?]' cut by binder.

3. (fols. 9-11v) 566.

4. (fols. 12-14v) 539.

5. (fols. 15-16) 533, copied by Fr. Knuth. Numbered '40', marked 'done'.

6-20. (fols. 17-60) Copies of 15 (651-664, 667) of the 18 Choräle von verschiedener Art, copied for F. Hauser? Corrections and preparation for a new copy are in F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy's hand, using first pencil and then red chalk. The title, '15 grosse Choral-Vorspiele', is on fol. 16v. On fol. 53v are notes relating to the substitution of [740] for 664, 'gedr. bei Breitkopf & Härtel'. Nos. 1, 7 and 15 were marked 'done'. Published as Compositions on Corales, books 3 and 4, 1846. Paginated 1-87.

21. (fols. 61-64v) 766, Partite diverse sopra: 'Christ der du bist der helle Tag'. Copied by F. Hauser, Vienna, 22 Dec 1830 on small upright quarto leaves.

22-65. (fols. 65-95v) 599-644, lacking 631 and 634, copied by Fr. Knuth, corrected in pencil by F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The 44 numbers from the Orgelbüchlein published as Compositions on Corales, books 1 and 2, 1845, from what was believed to be a (copied?) autograph manuscript, probably Deutsche Staatsbibliothek, Berlin, MS. Am. B. 47.

66. (fols. 96-106) 768, copied by Fr. Knuth and numbered '45'. Published as Eleven variations on the Corale Sey gegrusset Jesu gutig, 1846.

67-69. Preludes and fugues copied by E. Rietz. Each is a separate quire with calligraphic title-page. Corrected in pencil by F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy and marked 'done'.

67. (fols. 108-118v) 538 'Preludio e Fuga di Giov: Seb: Bach'. Paper resembles that of MSS. M. Deneke Mendelssohn c. 66-67 and c. 68 part 1.

68. (fols. 120-125) 532/2, 'Fugue von Joh: Seb: Bach'. The same paper as the end-papers of MSS. M. Deneke Mendelssohn c. 66-68.

69. (fols. 127-131) 550 'Preludio e Fuga di Giov: Seb: Bach'. Paper as 67.
