A pencil note inside the front cover reads 'For my brother Charles', and an explanatory note by C.E.A. [Casandra Austen] is pasted below it.

Bequeathed in 1817 to the author's sister Cassandra Austen (1773-1845); on her death passed to their youngest brother, Charles (1779-1852), and then by descent to his eldest daughter, Cassandra Esten (1808-1897), and to Cassandra Esten's nieces, the daughters of Charles's son Charles John Austen.
Acquisition
Bought from H. Deacon through R.W. Chapman and given by the Friends of the Bodleian, 1933.
