Beg. 'I happened accidently to open my casement the moon shone bright', (see MS. Beckford c. 14, fol. 1, where an epigraph for 'the long story' is written on a sheet dated 1777). The work was printed as The vision, ed. Guy Chapman (London & New York, 1930). The contemporary foliation omits '53', but there is no gap in the text.
