Hands

Anglicana; the same hand as British Library, Add MS 89790, olim Warminster (Wilts.), Longleat House, Marquess of Bath MS 29, attributed by O'Byrne to Nicholas Bellewe. ‘Ion Flemmyn’ in rubricator’s red (fol. 62), taken in earlier literature as the scribe's name but believed by O'Byrne to be the rubricator.

Decoration

At the openings of the texts, three-line blue lombards with red flourishing; two-line examples at lesser divisions. A few red and blue line-fillers at chapter ends, the text occasionally divided by red or blue paraphs. Headings in the text hand and ink.

Binding

Whittawed leather over rounded wooden boards, s. xv, sewn on four thongs. Scars from a central strap seating and from a seating for its pin in the middle of the lower board. At the front, the raised pastedown of the current binding, followed by a blank six-leaf quire (fols i–vii); at the rear, a quire of four, probably cut from a single folio of a Latin manuscript in double columns (fols 67–70).

Acquisition

Given by Alexander Fetherston, vicar of Wolverton, Bucks., and prebendary of Lichfield in 1680.

Provenance

‘Annes Helperby’ (twice; as ‘Hempperby’ once also), ‘Elyzabethe Stoughton’ (both fol. 69, perhaps from a Yorks. community of women?)
