Summary

Comprises:

a. (fols. 1-47) Carl Klingemann (1798-1862) [CK] and Sophie Klingemann (1822-1901) [SK]: 19 letters to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1845-1847). These letters were originally included in the bound 'Green Books' of Mendelssohn's incoming correspondence (MSS. M. Deneke Mendelssohn, b.4, d.28-53), and still bear their original numbering within the volumes. They were removed from the volumes ca. 1900, presumably at the time Karl Klingemann Jr. was compiling the selection of his father's correspondence with Mendelssohn, 'Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdys Briefwechsel mit Legationsrat Karl Klingemann' (Essen, 1909)), but only parts of two letters were included in the published volume. The individual letters with their 'Green Book' references are as follows. All letters are by Carl Klingemann unless otherwise noted.

h. (fol. 57-60) Letter from Alexej L'vov to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, 2/14 Dec 1844. In French. Fols. 59-60 contain biographical notes on L'vov (also in French) in a later hand. Bought, from Otto Haas, 2020 (formerly lot 479 in Stargardt/Erasmushaus joint sale, Basel, 19 Sept. 1992).
