Summary

The first overseas tour by Oxfam Regional Organisers, travelling from the north of England and the Midlands to Italy, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. In Naples, where 200,000 are unemployed, they visit probably the worst slums in Europe, where one standpipe supplies a whole street, children scavenge and steal, and Oxfam supports Father Mario Borelli and The House of Urchins. In the mountains in the south, after a ten hour journey by mules, they see the work of Service Civil International, providing water for families and their animals who live scattered throughout the region. In Sicily, the work of Danilo Dolci is described - agricultural development through modern methods, including methodical irrigation, and working with local people so that church, trade union and civil society leaders are brought together to give them a new outlook. Dolci also organised a hunger strike and mass marches by hundreds of men to force local government to build promised water supplies. In Tunisia, the Salvation Army has a school feeding programme, in Algeria, Service Civil International has built 37 houses, and a dispensary for victims of the war. In Morocco, Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants has set up feeding and hygiene education, homes for old people, a kindergarten, a medical centre, and nutrition courses for expectant mothers.
