parchment; stitching in natural-coloured thread preserved on fols 46, 59 & 62 only, (fols 35 & 55) remnants of it (stitching holes). Three bookmarks made of parchment strips glued to the outer margins of fols 28 (sic), 49 & 83 to indicate the beginning of bks 2–4.

i (17th-cent.) + 99 leaves

Hands

German textualis, s. xiv1/4, by a single hand; the parchment slip incorporated between fols 12/13 written in the text hand.

Decoration

Flourished initials in red and blue.

Coloured initials in red and blue.

Rubrication.

Binding

Brown tanned calf over laminated pulpboard for Archbp. Laud, 1637–1639

Acquisition

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.

Provenance

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: the late 14th-cent. ex-libris inscription at the upper right-hand margin of fol. 1r, immediately following the header, which was written in a different hand of s. xivex, employing one-compartment a only and likely from the Mainz Charterhouse, too (the same hand added a note at the head of fol. 83r referring to the table of chapters (bk 4) at the end of the volume): ‘...et est Cartusiensium prope mogunciam’.

William Laud, 1573–1645: Ex-libris, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. 1r.
