Fine gothic with secreatry features

Decoration

First initial in gold with pen ornamentation; other initials in blue with penwork in red.

Binding

Sewn on five cords and bound in (?)17th-cent. brown polished leather over pastboards, each cover framed by simple blind and gilt fillets; rebacked; the spine almost completely missing; traces of two pairs of green silk ties at the fore-edge; the edges of the leaves speckled red

Provenance

Inscribed on the lower pastedown, 15th-cent.: 'Iste liber Constat Johannes Ellys | Parsona ecclesie de Thurnsekegh'' and 'Iste liber constat | Dominus Iohannes Ellys rector | ecclesie de Thurnsekegh'; the lower pastedown also inscribed 'Robert Hournewell'(??).

Some missing leaves replaced with paper leaves written in a (?)16th-cent. English hand.

'W Stevenson', signed in an 18th-cent. hand (fol. ir).

Maggs, Cat. 687, no. 173, priced £31 10s (this number and price in pencil on the upper pastedown; a cutting from the catalogue glued to fol. ir).

J. P. R. Lyell, with his bookplate on fol. ir, and his acquisition note and price-code in pencil on the upper pastedown 'M[aggs] | 28/5/43 | A.V.V.'; bequeathed to N. R. Ker (see Lyell Cat., p. xxvii).
