Summary
By S. M., [i.e. Samuel Marriott.]
This volume consists chiefly of letters which passed between the writer and a Dissenting minister, from 27 Dec 1706 to 17 Mar 1709, and which ended in the writer's conforming to the Church. He had previously been a member of Mr. Benjamin Gravener's (or Grosvenor's) congregation; who was not however the minister with whom his correspondence was held.
An appendix is added, containing an account of an interview with Dr. John Mapletoft, vicar of St. Laurence Jewry (the writer's parish clergyman), with copies of letters, respecting admission to Holy Communion; which is recorded to have been at length received from the hands of Bishop Wilson (of Sodor and Man) and Dr. Mapletoft, 4 Feb 1711.
An original letter from Dr. Mapletoft of 23 Sep 1710 (copied at p. 875), is pinned in at the beginning of the volume.
On the last page the author adds a note dated 23 Jul 1735, mentioning doubts as to the validity of some of his former arguments, and specially those which concern the civil authority in matters ecclesiastical.
