MS. Rigaud 36

Summary

Notebooks of, and chiefly written by, prof. S. P. Rigaud on scientific and literary subjects, especially Astronomy, Mathematics, and Natural Science, usually consisting of stitched sections, each dated and signed and containing varying numbers of leaves: every volume has a (later) list of contents. Prof. Rigaud was fond of noting down criticisms as he read through a book, and everything he did was distinguished by neatness and precision.

The chief contents are as follows, the papers and essays to which no name is attached being by Rigaud:

Fol. 4. 'Tychonis Brahe Stellarum inerrantium ... numero millenarum ... canonica expositio ad annum ... mdc ... accommodata', copied from the MS. signed by Brahe himself in the Bodleian (Arch. Bodl. D. 32), 1833; with a prefatory note

Fol. 23. 'Sir Isaac Newton, Mrs. Catharine Barton & Lord Halifax', an essay, 1836

Fol. 36. A paper read before the Oxford Literary and Scientific Institution, April 6, 1836, on mechanics

Fol. 50. Collations of the Arenarius of Archimedes, in Greek

Fol. 66. Astronomical papers and tables, original or copied

Fol. 171. 'On physical causes to which the Mosaic Deluge may be attributed', 1834

Fol. 200. An essay on Well's Theory of Dew
