Binding

White leather on older boards, with clasp fittings but no clasps, a 15th cent. re-binding, English work.

Provenance

Bermondsey, Surrey, Cluniac priory and (from 1399) abbey of St Saviour (?): contains on flyleaves parts of a monastic catalogue of books, some with Cluniac interest, and the household expenses of Prince Edward of Windsor in journeying from London to Dover in August and September 1325, a route which passed through Bermondsey. The binding is 15th-cent. English work. See Sharpe, Benedictines, 22-3, for the surmised attribution of the catalogue to Bermondsey. (MLGB3: evidence from binding or elements of a binding typical of a particular library, or pastedowns bearing evidence of provenance).

Oxford, Oxfordshire, Merton College: 'Ex dono domini Ricardi FitzJames nuper Cicestrensis episcopi et Custodis istius collegii [sc. Merton] ...' (fol. v verso). Fitzjames died in 1522. (MLGB3: evidence from an ex-libris inscription or note of gift to an institution).

No. 257 in Th. James' Merton Catalogue 1600. Powicke, Merton Books, no. 1189. Medieval binding. (MLGB3)
