Title
J. S. Bach: Musicalisches Opfer
Shelfmark
MS. M. Deneke Mendelssohn c. 102
Summary
J. S. Bach's Musikalisches Opfer (BWV 1079). In the hand of Eduard Rietz (1802-1832). Apparently copied from the 1747 edition (including the dedication). The 'Canones diversi' and the Sonata are not present, suggesting that it was copied from an incomplete copy. It was a gift from Rietz to Mendelssohn in 1826, as recorded in a list of the Mendelssohns' music library from the 1820s (see Rudolf Elvers and Peter Ward Jones, 'Das Musikalienverzeichnis von Fanny und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy', Mendelssohn-Studien, 8 (1993), p. 90. It corresponds to the 'Mus. Opfer, v. Ritz geschrieben' in Mendelssohn's 1844 list of his music (cf. MS. M. Deneke Mendelssohn c. 49, fols. 29-30, transcribed in vol. III of Catalogue of the Mendelssohn papers in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, compiled by Peter Ward Jones (Tutzing: Hans Schneider, 1989), p. 286).
