Summary
Collections made by James Bowen, a painter and undertaker of Shrewsbury (d. 1774: his printed trade-card is in Gough Shropshire 2, p. 744; 18, p. 41) and his son John, for a history of Shropshire and especially Shrewsbury: 'Transcripts and extracts from originals, with ... other fragments of antiquity', collected from about 1740 to 1768 by James Bowen, to further his design of publishing the Antiquities of the county.
They are miscellaneous and in no order, and cannot be shortly described: a few documents are of the 17th century: at fol. 176 is a S.W. Prospect of Ludlow Castle, 1771, by John Bowen: at fol. 174 is a facsimile of an early charter relating to Llanlugan nunnery.
