Acquisition
At some period in the first half of the 19th cent., perhaps about 1825, a considerable collection of manuscript collations, indexes, etc., relating to Cicero's Works (but with very little relating to the Orations) was either received or formed within the Library, consisting of the following seventy volumes. It is possible that the Clarendon Press at one time contemplated a critical edition of Cicero's works, see the letters in no. 30385, and that by the time the edition of 1783 in ten volumes quarto (which is a mere reprint of Olivetus's edition) was produced at the Press, the idea had been abandoned. The collections made for the purpose may have been given to the Bodleian at some subsequent date, but there is no evidence in the volumes themselves or in the Library archives that they were ever in the possession of the Press, and two were certainly not (nos. 28179-80).
