Summary

These sermons were preached in answer to a sermon which had been delivered on the forenoon of the former day in the same church and upon the first text, by "a young man," "a dominie," from Ross, in reply to "somewhat anent the restriction of redemption," which had been said by the preacher in a previous sermon. "My colleague indeed gave him a call to preach, but he is too ingenuous to have been privie to so base a plot."

The author appears to be Andrew Cant, junior, who was minister of Trinity College Church in 1673–1675. [H. Scott's Fasti Eccl. Scoticanœ, i. 32.] His colleague was Mr. John Mackqueen. Cant published at one time some Theses de libero arbitrio [Ibid. 27], and the author of these sermons remarks (fol. 89), "A third sort say confidently in some Theses of mine formerly printed I erred the same error, and asserted universall redemption, but if I had done so, being then a young man, it were no disparagement for me now to retract." He gives at the conclusion of his second sermon a very angry account of the passages of his controversy, which appears to have been carried on with great bitterness and violence.
