Summary
Small black notebook, originally Bateson's, inscribed inside 'Violas received from President Brainerd Middlebury College Vermont'. Contains 7 pages of manuscript notes and observations on viola specimens. The back cover is labelled 'Rubus received 1902' and contains 16 pages of brief notes by Bateson.
Used extensively by Darlington for his own biographical and autobiographical writings. The back cover is inscribed 'Brief Lives' and the front page, dated '21.X.47', is headed 'Occasional Sketches'; the latest entry (in front of book) is dated 8 Feb 1970. Includes recollections of R.A. Fisher, E. Barker, R. Birley, J.B.S. Haldane, G.R.S. Snow, conversations with Rothschild, W.J.L. Lawrence, etc., as well as an account of Darlington's parents and early upbringing.
