Summary

Extracts by Francis Junius from three MSS. of Frisian laws, collated by him with the Cologne edition of 1471, of which the copy used by Junius is now MS. Junius 109:

A. Fol. 1. From the Fivelgoër MS. (written about 1427), at that time in the possession of Werner Emmen, senator of Groningen (fol. 15v), for which see Richthofen, Hss. über fries. Rechtsgeschichte, i. 23 et seqq., 205 et seqq., and the edition of M. de Haan Hettema, Dockum (1841). beg. 'Hweth is riucht? List en kenst riuchtis unde godis'.

B. Fols. 22, 76. From a MS. written in 1475 by Sidzo Unia (fol. 75) in 1684 owned by Simon Abbes Gabbema, the historian and archivist of Frisia, whose collection is now at the St. Antoniegasthuis at Leeuwarden in Holland. This was a fine quarto referred to as the Codex Unia, but not now known to exist. beg. 'Hwat is riucht. List ende konst riuchtis ende godis'. A second extract (fol. 76) contains the laws of the Upstalboom, beg. 'Hier beginnet da wilkarren fan opstallis baem'.

C. Fol. 46. From another Gabbema MS. in folio, now known as the MS. Roorda, comprising an excerpt in Frisian from the pseudo-capitulary of Charles the Great in favour of the Frisians, as confirmed in the 15th cent. by Frederick III, king of the Romans, for which see Richthofen, Friesische Rechtsquellen, pp. 351-7, and other excerpts edited by Hettema, Oude friesche Wetten, ii. 20-34.
