(MS. Eng. misc. f. 247) No. 47, contains a note by Gilpin, 5 Oct. 1843: 'These little stitch-books were meant in the first instance for the hasty insertion of such memoranda of the day as were worth noticing; or for the setting down of the first rude hints of any subject in hand. But by too much enlargement it got troublesome ... latterly they lost the form of a Diary altogether; and became only the depository of what was meant to be written only in a more book-making sort of way ...', Feb.-March 1797, 104 pages.
