Summary
The following title, taken from the MS. from which this copy was made, is prefixed: "A copy of the visitation of Staffordshire, made by William Flower, Norroy king of armes in an. 1583, (the original having beene long since purloyned out of this office) which copy was taken from a transcript thereof sometime belonging to Edward Gwyn, late of Furnivalls Inne, in com. Midd. (but now in the library of Willm. Peirpont, of Thoresby, in com. Nott., esqr.) of William Dugdale, esqr., Norroy king of armes, and given into this society, an. 1661. In which transcript though there be divers errors and mistakes, yet considering that the originall is thus lost, it was thought better to preserve a copy which may possibly in time be rectified, then to have nothing at all thereof." To this account the transcriber of this MS. has added these words: "This is the title my master put to his booke."
The arms are in a few cases given very roughly in trick.
