Summary
A chartulary of the abbey of Malmesbury, so far as concerns the office of Pittancer, consisting of:
(fol. 1) A Rental of the estates assigned to the office of Pittancer, wanting the first and last leaves; the first part is in order of properties, the second part is arranged to show the times at which the rent was due.
(fol. 13) The Chartulary proper, 197 charters, the first leaf of the list of contents and the last leaf of the charters (containing charters 198-204 and part of 205) wanting. The list of contents contains 200 in the original hand and seven additional, but about fifty more documents, chiefly copies of grants, have been added in the 14th and 15th centuries, and two on fols. 1r, 1v bear a date as late as 1503. Some small initial letters have been cut out of fols. 41, 45, 46, 63.
The pittancer dispensed additions to the common fare on particular festivals, and as there was no general fund of the abbey, he received the money to pay for them direct from estates assigned to his office.
