Plain red initials.

Binding

Medieval binding. Sewn on three bands, and bound in wood boards covered in (much darkened) pale leather, tooled in blind with lattice patterns; the head and tail of the spine with remnants of tabs; each cover with a boss at each corner and in the centre (two of those on the upper cover missing), and with corner-pieces at the fore-edge; remains of two strap-and-pin clasps, closing from the lower to the upper cover, the straps themselves missing; the middle of the top edge of the lower board with a chain-staple and four links of a chain; the upper cover with a parchment title-piece attached at the top edge, inscribed '[...? - in red] Thome [...] sentenc[...]'; the upper cover inscribed with a large red 'h' to the fore-edge side of the central boss; the endleaves including bifolia of a MS. homilary(?) citing Bede, Gregory, and the Gospels, etc.: strips from the same MS. appear to have been used for strengthening in the middle of each quire. Boxed.

Inscribed 'Pertinet ad johannem de selb' [helb?] presbitum in Ebern' (upper pastedown; most of the MSS. listed by Krämer, 1989, belonged to the same man); the bottom edge of the leaves indistinctly inscribed near the spine 'Ebern | 12' (?)

Probably sold by a parish priest of Ebern in 1878

Jacques Rosenthal, Munich, with his price-code 'MSJ' (i.e. Mark 30) in pencil on the upper pastedown, in his Kat. 31 (c.1884), item 2580 (this number inscribed in pencil on the upper pastedown)

Howel Wills, of Florence (with his shelf-mark label pasted to the upper pastedown), his sale, Sotheby's 11 July 1894 and five following days, probably lot 1863, bought by Quaritch for £6

Quaritch, Rough List144 (1894), item 440, priced £8; presumably sold and subsequently bought back by Quaritch, and inscribed on the lower pastedown with their price-code, and on the upper pastedown with their number '466' in a rectangle, and offered in their cat., 1931, no. 92, at £100.

J. P. R. Lyell, (with his bookplate, and acquisition-note in pencil on the upper pastedown), bought from Quaritch, 31 July 1942 (on the same day as MS. Lyell 20).
