Includes letters congratulating the Earl on his engagement (including a letter from Queen Sophie [Sophia] of the Netherlands); congratulations on the birth of a son, Jun 1877; condolences on the death of the 5th Earl's brother-in-law Odo Russell, 1884; correspondence about the writing and publication of Herbert Maxwell's Life and letters of George William Frederick, fourth Earl of Clarendon (1913), enclosing an important letter from the 4th Earl about his imminent work in Ireland and expectation of failure (29 Jun 1847), 1847, 1911-1913; and military-related correspondence and papers, enclosing earlier letters of the Earl of Verulam (1835), 1873-1904.
