Title

'The contemplacion of the blessud lif of our lorde Ihesu', or Speculum Vitae Christi, a translation and adaptation of Bonaventura's treatise

Shelfmark

MS. Bodl. 634

Summary

'The contemplacion of the blessud lif of our lorde Ihesu', or Speculum Vitae Christi, a translation and adaptation of Bonaventura's treatise, made, as MS. Brasenose College 9 attests, by Nicholas Love prior of the Carthusian monastery of Mount Grace of Ingleby, Yorkshire (appointed prior in 1410).

The present MS. wants the first five and part of the sixth chapter (out of sixty-three), beginning at 'that cleped the euer-lastyng temple of pees'; the above title is from the long colophon, which explains the relation of the work to Bonaventura's, and that it is written 'to confusion of all false Lollardes and heretikes.'

At fol. 76 follow a 'short tretes of the ... sacrament of Cristes blessed Body and of the merueilles ther of': beg. 'Memoriam fecit mirabilium suorum ... Cap. lxiiij. Thes wordes of Dauid in the Sawter', but fol. 77 (the last) is much injured, and ends with 'makethe and worchethe therynne specially', some leaves being lost. This 'short tretes' is in some sense a part of the preceding work.
