Summary
The Secretum abbatis or chartulary and feodary of Glastonbury abbey, entitled, in a rather later hand: 'Liber monasterii Glastonie de perquisito bone memorie Walteri de Mointon quondam abbatis ibidem, in quo continentur videlicet omnes copie munimentorum ecclesie Glastoniensis et vocatur secretum abbatis, secundo folio Et cuius totus' (fol. xivv). Preceding the table of contents headed 'Kalendare sequentis operis de iurisdiccione Glaston' ecclesie' and printed in Notes and Queries for Somerset and Dorset, vol. xii et seq. (fol. 5v), is a brief Latin chronicle to 1291, 'De ortu regum Anglie descendencium a stirpe Ade' (fol. 1).
The major divisions are:
Fol. 20. 'De jurisdiccione archidiaconatus Glastonie'
Fol. 116. 'Incipiunt carte particulares terre Glastonie'
Fol. 249. 'Terra sancte Marie Glastonie sicut continetur in libro scaccarii Londoniensis qui dicitur domus dei quem componi fecit rex Willelmus primus subacto sibi et pacificato regno Anglie'
Fol. 264. additional charters from 1348
Fol. 293. a separate treatise, 'Glaston' memorandum de feodis militaribus et eorum particulis tenementis de abbatia Glastonie compositum anno domini Walteri abbatis secundo', printed by F. W. Weaver for the Somerset Record Society (1910), pp. xviii-xix
There are prefixed:
Fol. ii a leaf, formerly numbered '145', from a late 14th-cent. collection of statutes, containing part of the statute of Provisors (1352) in French
A contemporary but incomplete copy of the Treaty of Calais (Oct. 22, 1360) headed: 'Hec est concordia facta apud Caleys inter regem Anglie et regem Francie' (fol. iii)
'Perquisit' domini Johannis Chynnok dei gracia abbatis super appropriacione ecclesiæ de Buddelegh in diocesi Bathoniensi' (fol. viiiv)
15th-cent. notes from Pipe rolls (fol. ixv)
An annotated list of abbots from the 14th abbot to 1493 (fol. xiii)
An exemption from pope Celestine [iii] to Robert, abbot of Malmesbury (1187-1205) (fol. xiv)
On fol. 56v the account of Edward ii's visit to Glastonbury is identical with that by Adam of Domerham (ed. Hearne, ii. 587). There are miniatures at fol. 20.
