Decoration
One good historiated initial depicting a seated clerk reading from a book on a lectern, in which the opening words may be read as those of the present work. (Pächt and Alexander i. 777, pl. LXXIV). Blue and rose initial on gold ground with three-quarter border. Other initials gold on rose and blue grounds.
Binding
Typical Holkham binding; the spine lettered in gilt 'OCULUS | SACERDOTUM || MS. MEMBR. | SÆC. XIV.'
Provenance
Sir Edward Coke (1552–1634) : described as 'Oculus Sacerdotum' among the 'Divinity MSS.' in the catalogue of his library (William O. Hassall, ed., A catalogue of the library of Sir Edward Coke (Yale Law Library Publications, 12: London, 1950), no. 224).
Bookplate of ' THOMAS WILLIAM COKE ' (1754–1842), and signed 'Thos. Willm. Coke' (fol. i verso), fol. ii recto with notes inscribed by his friend William Roscoe (1753–1831), formerly Norfolk, Holkham Hall, MS. 159.
