Given by the composer to William Sterndale Bennett in Leipzig, 17 March 1837; sold at Puttick & Simpson auction, 26 Apr. 1875, to Thomas William Taphouse; acquired from him by Thomas Case (relative by marriage of Bennett) and descended from him to Thomas Odling.

Acquisition

Bought, Sotheby's, 17 May 2002, lot 123, with funds provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Friends of the Bodleian and individual donors.
