Bequeathed to the Bodleian in 1755

Provenance

Hatfield Peverel, Essex, Benedictine priory of St Mary the Virgin; cell of St Albans: "Liber prioratus de Hatfeld peuerell. Ex dono domini Iohannis Bebseth. De licencia Willelmi Abbatis [Heywath 1401–1420]." (fol. 3v, opposite first leaf of main text). (MLGB3: evidence from an ex-libris inscription or note of gift to an institution).

"Hic liber reppertus in Monasterio S. Albani 1537." (fol. 1r). On fol. 119r: "Incipit liber quem composuit venerabilis Beda presbiter de gestis Anglorum quem scribi fecit Willelmus de Writele ad utilitatem legencium cuius anime propicietur deus." "Willemus de Writele" has been crossed out and "Iohannes Bebset quondam prior de Hatffeld peuerel[" substituted. "I think that the note on fol. 3r, 'Hinc forte fit ut hodie etiam nunc vocetur britannice ynys y Kedyrn id est insula fortium' is in Sir John Prise's hand: so perhaps also the title on fol. 1r." (). (MLGB3)

Richard Rawlinson, 1690–1755
