Tentatively attributed by van Dijk to the Franciscan friary of Brive-la-Gaillarde, Corrèze, founded by St Anthony of Padua.

Above the month of January has been written: adrianus (?) prior (16th cent.).

In use by 1606 as a service book in the Benedictine nunnery of St. Jean at Bonneval-les-Thouars near Poitiers (Douce Legacy, no. 72).

Given in 1703 by the abbess to N. J. Foucault, 1643–1721.

Summary

'... Ordo Missalis secundum consuetudinem Romane Curie', a Franciscan Missal: a calendar with appropriate verses and drawings precedes on fol. 5, the Proprium de Tempore begins on fol. i, the Ordinary of the Mass on fol. ccxxxvii, the Canon on fol. ccxliiiv, the 'Proprium Sanctorum' on fol. ccxlvii, the 'Commune Sanctorum' on fol. cccxxxiv, votive masses, etc., on fol. ccclxxvi, including two 'pro Imperatore' and 'pro Rege', and a 'benedictio cinerum' (fol. ccccxii, cf. ccxxxi). There are added offices of stt. Gaudentius and Eutropius, bps. & martyrs. The occurrence of st. Louis of Toulouse in the calendar on Aug. 19 shows that the date is not before 1317, and the absence of st. Thomas Aquinas that it is not much later: but there are some later additions, cf. fols. cxcb, ccccxvi, etc. There are very many small coloured drawings and six full-page ones (fols. 3v, ccxxxiii) well designed and executed in a peculiar style, in which purple predominates: Douce has written a list of their subjects on fol. ccccxviii: and see Waagen's Treasures of Art (1854), iii. 70. [In the large drawings light green and brown are much used, and in the initials mauve. This last fact leads me to suspect that the MS. was written towards the close of the century and near the Italian frontier. The calendar seems only to include saints found in the Proprium Sanctorum, and Aquinas is absent from many 15th cent. calendars, including some of missals. E.W.B.N.].

Custodial history

The name of 'Jacque Christoflet' is on fol. 5v (16th cent.), and 'Domina Maria Boidersillia' (?: early 17th cent.?) on fol. ccccxvv. Owned in 1606 by Guillaume Ferrand (fol. ccclxxxix), who on fol. ccclxiv copies a document relating to Bonneval abbey: 'Reverendissimæ Dominæ Elizabeht a Castellione dignissimæ Abatissæ monasterij Diui Joannis de Bona Valle . Datum penultima mensis Aprillis 1652': Elizabeth de Chastillon was abbess of Bonneval near Thouars (not far from Saintes where st. Eutropius was specially honoured) from 1646 to 1658. 'Ce Missel m'a esté donné par made [Magdalena Angelica Maria] de Chatillon abesse de St Jean de Bonneual [1677-1708] le 10e Aoust 1703. Concanet' (?: Coucaret ?). [Coucauet? E.W.B.N.].
