Title
An alphabet of well-painted capitals (early 16th cent. ?)
Shelfmark
MS. Douce f. 2
Summary
A few illuminated letters and ornaments of earlier date and some 17th cent. paintings of flowers have been inserted: at the end is a French 17th cent. recipe for making 'Or pour ecrire a la plume': fols. 25-56, etc., are blank. The volume originally contained 124 leaves, but Douce notes that the leaves taken out were ' blank & dirty.'.
'Rogerius Le Lieur emit hunc librum pro Carthusia Parisiensi r. 1. 1. c.' (16th cent.): the binding bears on one side 'Iesus Maria', on the other ' D. Rogerius Le Lieur', and on both sides a stamped crucifix: 'D. Roger Le Lieur' is also illuminated on the inner covers. Presumably the purchaser was connected with the Chartreuse, and had the use of the book.
