Folder 1. Correspondence, 1869, predominantly letters from Alexander J. Ellis, mostly on his glossotype system of phonetic representations of speech, and F.J. Furnivall, on texts to be edited for the Early English Text Society (EETS). Some other names in folder include: Thomas Hunter; Ralph Carr; Walter Gregor; David Laing; Danby P. Fry; D. Donaldson; Neil McBride; S. W. Kershaw. Dated 5 Dec is a copy of a letter in Murray's handwriting which he sent to ministers of the Kirk, asking for information on the present limits of the Gaelic tongue. Most of the letters from this month are replies to Murray's request.

Some other names in folder include: James Brydon; Danby P. Fry; R.G. Latham; Herbert W. Seager. Near the front of the collection is a handwritten paid invoice for £3 for removing goods from Peckham Rd to Hendon, whither Murray had moved. In August, there is a letter to Mrs Murray from Charles Scott of Lloyds concerning furniture that Mr Murray would like to buy.

Folder 4. Correspondence, 1871-1872, includes: two cards for the University of London's Matriculation Examination, Jan 1871, and the First B.A. Examination, 1871.
