Book belonging to Anna Coltman, Memoir of Field-Marshall Sir Hew Dalrymple Ross, G.C.B., Royal Horse Artillery, 1871, with her signature on title page. Sir Hew Dalrymple Ross (1779-1868) was the maternal grandfather of Anna Coltman and her siblings. He fought with Wellington in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo. The book was compiled by an unknown hand after Ross's death, and privately printed. Enclosed within is a four page letter, 1809, possibly in Ross's hand, addressed from 'Gariesigo' [Jaraicejo, Spain] on 9 Aug, to 'My dear Mary' (identified as his sister on pages 5-6 of the book). It begins with the march from Lisbon to Talavera: 'you will easily imagine my vexation at finding I was too late to share in the actions of the 27th and 28th - certainly the most splendid in point of gallantry that was ever fought'
