Title
Counter-Tenor part-book of Services (at front) and Anthems (at back, volume reversed)
Shelfmark
MS. Mus. d. 158
Summary
From a set of two Counter-Tenor, one Tenor and one Bass quarto part-books of Services (front) and Anthems (back, volumes reversed). Nearly all the music is also found in the folio part-books described above. There is approximate agreement in content within the set, though the same sections were not retained in all parts when the books were made up. This was done in the late 18th cent. from partially obsolete books copied by several hands during the first half of the century, with extra leaves added (see MS. Mus. d. 166, p. 98). Dates noted by Morgan Cove, 1742-1743 (e.g. in MS. Mus. d. 16l, p. 250 rev.; d.166, p. 91; d.156, p. 254 rev. and p. 243 rev.) refer to payment for copying: see MS.Mus.d.156, p. 243 rev. P. Hayes noted payments in 1795 (e.g. MS. Mus. d. 158, p. 132). His work includes J. Kent's Services in C (new to the collection) and (in MS. Mus. d. 158, p. 120 and MS. Mus. d.166, p. 114) a version of B. Roger's Service in D 'copy'd from New Coll: Old Books [i.e. MSS. Mus. c. 48, e.23-25 (?)], which are different from Boyce's Edition', later marked 'Do not sing from this copy'. Another hand added T. Raylton's Evening Service in E flat (also new to the collection) using MS. Mus. d.165 (described below) instead of MS. Mus. d. 166. Additional music in the hand of G. Heathcote, towards the end of each section, is dated 1799-1800. Amongst 19th-cent. additions is music by Adrian Batten, Service in D minor, also in the folio part-books (MSS. Mus. c. 46-47), copied in 1807 in MSS. Mus. d. 156, 158 and 16l; by Handel, 'O Lord we trust', in MS. Mus. d. 158; by Stephen Elvey, MSS. Mus. d.156, 161 and 166; and by Sir George Job Elvey, Service in C, copied in 1834 in MS. Mus. d. 161.
