(fol.1) Penitential psalms, starting imperfect in Ps.6:9 (at '|| qui operamini ...') due to the loss of a leaf before fol. 1.
(fol.13) Litany, with Ignatius (8) between Vincent and Fabian among 12 original martyrs; Blandina (9) among 14 original virgins; various additions include Bruno (canonised in 1516; added in last place to the confessors); followed by four collects; fol. 21v ruled, otherwise blank.
(fol.22) Office of the dead, Use of the Carthusians (the responsories correspond to numbers 14,36,46; 67,51,33; 60,95,53 in Ottosen, Office of the Dead); including prayers 'Pour les freres et soeurs de no ordene' (fol. 30v-31r; cf. fol. 72r), 'Pour les biens faiteurs de lordene' (fol. 31r-v); with neumes added between the lines in the nine lessons and their versicles; fol. 73v ruled, otherwise blank.
(fol.74) Ritual for last sacraments and burial service, with rubrics and other detailed directions in French, the Litany very similar to the preceding one, and with similar additions, but with Hylarion (11) and Columbanus (14) among the 16 original confessors; and Columba (11) among the nineteen virgins; the petitions (fols. 81v-85v) with feminine forms, and masculine forms above the line: 'ora pro eaº' and 'libera euam'; feminine forms are used alone in one of the prayers (fol. 89v), and with masculine endings above the line in another (fol. 91r).

Decoration

One four-line initial D[ilexi] in reddish and blue with white decoration, infilled with red, green, and blue foliate scrolls, on a gold ground (fol. 22r). Three-line intials in gold, on a blue and rose ground with white tracery to major divisions (fols. 13r, 74r, 81v, and an offset of a three- or four-line initial on fol. iv verso); similar two-line initials to psalms. lessons, etc.

One-line initials alternately in plain red or blue, to verses and other minor divisions.

Very simple line-fillers, alternately plain red or blue, in the litanies.

Musical notation

Music (see van Dijk 1957).

Binding

Sewn on four cords, and bound in polished dark brown leather over oak boards; the covers stamped with patterns of numerous lozenge-shaped fleurs-de-lis stamps, and rectangular stamps, and fillets; with two nails and two textile straps at the fore-edge of the upper board, two corresponding holes in the lower cover and board: the remains of strap-and-pin clasps; rebacked.

Given by F. E. Norris, 1952.

Provenance

Written for the Nuns of Mont-de-Sainte-Marie, Gosnay, Pas-de-Calais. ‘Chest a chartruses de lez Gosnay’ (fol.ii) and cf. feminine forms in litany and some prayers (fols. 82–85v, 89v, 91); St. Bruno [canonised 1516] is added in the litany (fol.15v).
