Custodial history
The papers were among the manuscripts of the Le Flemings of Rydal Hall, and bear the numbers of the chronological arrangement of the whole series made by H. Maxwell Lyte in 1882, except for 23 letters at the end of MS. Don c. 40.
The majority are calendared in HMC 25: 12th report (1890), app., pt. vii. Lists in MS. Don. c. 37 give the reference numbers of papers (fol. 1) not calendared by HMC, but included in the collection, and (fol. 2) calendared by HMC, but no longer present. Some of the latter were sold at Sotheby's, 6 April 1925, lots 260-72 (lots 269 and 272 are now MS. Eng. hist. c. 306, fols. 1, 2, 4). Others are in MS. Eng. lett. d. 200, fols. 155-65.

The papers were bought at Sotheby's in 1933 and given to the Library by the Friends of the Bodleian.
