Summary

Hours of the Virgin Mary, according to some Netherland use, in Latin. Begins with the Vespers of the Hours of the Virgin. There are many very fine and delicate miniatures, and the borders show birds, flowers, insects and grotesques in profusion, all in Flemish style: see Waagen, Treasures of Art (1854), iii. 82: a facsimile of fol. 184 is in H. Shaw's Illuminated Ornaments (1833), no. xxxiii.

The book was undoubtedly written for Maximilian I, archduke of Austria, emperor of the Romans, while he was married to Mary of Burgundy, that is to say between 1477 and 1482. His arms are on fols. 19v, 36, 42v, 91v, 132, 132v, 151v, and especially 263 (Quarterly, 1st Austria ancient, 2nd Burgundy modern, 3rd Burgundy ancient without the bordure, 4th Brabant, over all Flanders, encircled by the Golden Fleece and surmounted by the archiducal crown): the letter (e) is frequently introduced, and twice the peacock's tail of Austria (fols. 97v, 98). Another prayer-book, written for him rather later, is Now MS. 1907 in the Hofbibliothek at Vienna. The binding is dark green morocco with gold tooling by Derome le Jeune with the arms of Paris Le Meyzieu (about A.D. 1770-75).
