Summary
Fols. 1-124: Correspondence, 1911-1919, with the Colonial Office concerning the terms of Lugard's appointment as Governor-General of Nigeria and the persistent efforts he made to persuade the Office to introduce his "scheme for Continuous Administration" originally proposed in 1905 (see MSS. Brit. Emp. s. 65). It also covers other differences of opinion with the Colonial Office. A memorandum of July 1940, attached to some notes of an interview with Lewis Harcourt in May 1914, comments upon the difficulty Lugard experienced in working under him. There are two brief memoranda of 1917 by H. Goldsmith and Donald Cameron on delays and inconveniences which had occurred when Lugard continued to administer Nigeria from England.
Fols. 125-128: Press cuttings, 13 Jul 1912.
Fols. 129-150: Correspondence with Lord Milner, 1910-1922.
Fols. 151-160: Correspondence between Lugard, his brother, Lewis Harcourt and James Craig, with press cuttings concerning Lugard's indiscreet speech on 11 Jun 1914 to the Ulster Volunteer Force at Drumalis, Larne, 1914.
