Viswamitra came from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, to work in Hodgkin's laboratory on the structure of the peptide antibiotic thiostrepton supported by a grant from the Squibb Institute for Medical Research. He returned to Bangalore to make his career, spending further periods of research in Oxford and Cambridge.
