Ely, Cambridgeshire, Benedictine abbey and (1109) cathedral priory of St Peter and St Etheldreda: "Iste liber pertinet ecclesie Eliensi" (foot of last leaf: fol. 122v). Ely cross-mark on fol. 1r (outer margin). (MLGB3: evidence from an ex-libris inscription or note of gift to an institution).

Summary

Eighty-seven letters and documents connected with st. Thomas Becket, archbp. of Canterbury, chiefly relating to his dissensions with the king and pope.

There are forty-two letters from Becket, twenty-five from pope Alexander iii, four from king Henry ii, two from bp. Foliot, one from king Stephen, etc.: a full list is in the MS. at fol. iii.

At fol. 17 are the terms of a peace between France and England, May 1160, and at fol. 116 an account of the martyrdom of the archbishop, beg. 'Ex insperato & in transitu.'

Custodial history

'Iste liber pertinet ecclesie Eliensi' (14th century): the marks 'His. Aug. 21', '9118' show that the book was owned by lord Somers and passed to sir Joseph Jekyll, in the sale of whose library in 1739 it is lot 259, and was bought by Dr. R. Rawlinson.
