Summary
Arnold's edition, with F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy's note on p. 1 'bezeichnet zur Aufführung in der Pauliner Kirche zu Leipzig, 7 Nov. 1836'. For organ part, see Deneke 72/2.
Attached to this page is a copy by Ferdinand von Woringen of recitatives, omitted from the printed editions, from a manuscript owned by Sir George Smart, about which F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy wrote to von Woringen, 30 Apr 1833: see Grossmann-Vendrey, pp. 71-72. The words are in English with a German translation by Klingemann: see Grossmann-Vendrey, loc. cit. A copy of von Woringen's manuscript is attached to the title-page; on the verso is a discarded draft, possibly F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy's intended overture. Professional transcripts of the extra recitatives were placed throughout the score, pp. 24/5, 26/7, 44/5, 60/1, 62/3, and 80/1. Also included at pp. 60/1 is F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy's autograph score of added flute, clarinet and horn parts for three numbers in 1833, and at pp. 80/1 a soprano aria in E minor translated 'Hoffnung lindert unsre Schmerzen', from Smart's manuscript 'die Clarinetten waren zur Aufführung beim Düsseldorfer Musikfest, 26 Mai 1833, zugesetzt, es keine Orgel war': a note pencilled later by F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy reads 'bleibt besser weg'.
