Binding
18th century, Italian: wood? boards, no bevel; lightish brown leather, tooled with triple gilt lines and a blind roll to form an outer frame on each cover, around a large blind decorative centrepiece; spine with gilt lines and a gilt stamp in each panel, gilt red-leather label; no clasps; metal corner-pieces at the outer corners only, two to each cover, each with a domed boss and floral decoration (late 15th century, transferred from MS. Canon. Misc. 409); edges plain, with slight shadows of two straps from a former binding; paste-downs of carta bassanese. Rebacked (old spine re-laid) at the Bodleian, 1940s (perhaps dated 23 November 1948, but indistinctly written)

The year 1476 is referred to as the current year on fol. 4 and is also mentioned on fols 7, 8 and elsewhere
Written for the Benedictine monastery of San Servolo, Venice( Benedictine congregation of St Giustina of Padua). Some calendrical instructions are in the Venetian dialect and the dedication of the church of San Servolo is prominent in the calendar entry for 24 November (fol. 21v)
Matteo Luigi Canonici (1727– c. 1806)
Following Canonici's death, the collection passed to his brother, Giuseppe Canonici, and then to Canonici's nephew, Giovanni Perissinotti, in 1807 following Giuseppe Canonici's death

'...Martyrologium siue Datarium secundum ritum Sancte Romane Ecclesie', with prologues relating to St. Jerome, Usuardus, etc. Elaborate calendarial tables (partly in Italian) and a full calendar precede: the honour paid to St. Servulus (May 24 and Nov. 23) shows that the volume was written at Trieste, and the year is given on foll. 1, 4.
