'Hore beate Marie Virginis', according to the use of Ghent
Shelfmark
MS. Douce 223
Summary
Preceded by:
(fol. 1) a manuscript calendar
(fol. 8) suffrages and prayers
(fol. 27) the eight verses of St. Bernard
(fol. 30) 'Hore de Sancto Spiritu'
(fol. 34) 'Hore sancte Crucis'
Followed by:
(fol. 90) the 'Septem psalmi penitenciales' with litany
(fol. 107) 'Vigilie Mortuorum'
(fol. 134v) more prayers and suffrages
(fol. 155) benedictions
Ten fine miniatures remain, but others are lost after fols. 13, 33, 48, 63, 69, 74, 79 at least: there are also many illuminated borders and capitals: see Waagen, Treasures, iii. 85. The internal evidence proves that the volume was written for some one connected with the Benedictine abbey of St. Peter's at Blandin near Ghent, see especially fol. 151v. The contemporary binding is dark brown leather on boards with ' ora pro nobis sancta dei genitrix vt digni efficiamur promissione xpristi' and emblems, exactly as no. 316 in Weale's South Kensington Bookbindings ii. (1894), p. 166, which he connects with Bruges: the back is later, and the clasp broken. A coat of arms is erased on fol. 107, see 6v, 22v.
