Staves of 4 red lines with square notation

Binding

Sewn on four bands and bound in Italian(?) 18th(?)-cent. speckled polished brown calf over pasteboards; the spine with an English (19th-cent?) red leather title-piece lettered in gilt 'MANUSCRIPT | – | ORDO | FRATRUM | MINORUM | – | 15TH | CENTURY', probably added for Steele (cf. MS. Lat. th. e. 15); traces of printed music are visible under the lower pastedown.

Bought at Sotheby's 1 Feb. 1922, lot 848.

Provenance

Colophon on fol. 40v: 'Explicit iste liber deo gratias. Amen. Sub anno domini MCCCCXXIX. Tempore fratris Compagniutii de Ancona'

Inscribed '3295' (upper pastedown).

19th-cent. inscriptions in Italian (fol. 71r).

Robert Steele, of Wandsworth Common, with his booklabel, sold at Hodgson's, 15 June 1903, lot 485 (with vestiges of the catalogue description stuck to the upper pastedown).

E. Crawshaw, with his bookplate, and his erased purchase code consisting of the price-code, and the date '16', '6', '03', and 'H'[odgson's] (fol. 71r)
