Summary
Notebooks of, and chiefly written by, prof. S. P. Rigaud on scientific and literary subjects, especially Astronomy, Mathematics, and Natural Science, usually consisting of stitched sections, each dated and signed and containing varying numbers of leaves: every volume has a (later) list of contents. Prof. Rigaud was fond of noting down criticisms as he read through a book, and everything he did was distinguished by neatness and precision.
The chief contents are as follows, the papers and essays to which no name is attached being by Rigaud:
'Reply to Mr. Panizzi's letter of Jan. 23, 1838', the latter being in answer to Rigaud's anonymous 'Defence of the Resolution for omitting Mr. Panizzi's bibliographical notes from the Catalogue of the Royal Society' (fol. 7)
A letter from prof. Rigaud to mr. B. Vulliamy about a pendulum, Oct. 1814 (fol. 419)
The following pieces are not in prof. Rigaud's hand:
'Notes of Mr. J. Dinwiddie's Lectures' on Electricity, Mechanics, etc., by 'S. R.' (fol. 30)
'Beaufoy's Narrative of an ascent ... of Mont Blanc', Aug. 1787 (fol. 126)
'Experiments of Artillery at Landguard Fort ... 1774' (fol. 143)
Dr. Thomas Hornsby's Lectures on Natural Philosophy, in his own hand (fol. 188)
