Binding

Brown tanned calf over laminated pulpboard for Abp. Laud, 1637–1639.

Acquisition

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.

Provenance

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: The present book consists of two, originally independent parts, which were possibly bound together already at the Mainz Charterhouse, at the latest in the 15th century, as they share the same foliating hand (from the Charterhouse, s. xv). At the upper left-hand margin (fol. i recto) a 15th-cent. shelfmark from the Mainz Charterhouse: ‘a xxxvi’. The shelfmark does not belong to this copy: fol. i is a medieval waste leaf from the Charterhouse, which was reused as front flyleaf by the Laudian binder.

William Laud, 1573–1645: Ex-libris inscription of Archbishop Laud, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. i verso.
