Shelfmark

MS. M. Deneke Mendelssohn c. 8

Summary

Many compositions are first drafts, and minor corrections occur throughout. None is included in the MS. Thematic Catalogue of Green Books now in Berlin in which F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy collected his works (MSS. M. Deneke Mendelssohn c. 28, c. 60), and the leaves are probably from a volume of that collection already missing when the catalogue was made in 1848.

(fols. 1-4) First draft ('L.e.g.G.') of Capriccio for piano [MWV U43] (Andante in E flat, Allegro di molto in E flat minor), 'für seinen lieben Freund Louis Heidemann componirt'. Unpublished.

(fol. 5) Op. 7 no. 2, published as no. 2 of 'Seven Characteristic Pieces' for piano, dated 17 Jul 1824. Formerly folded longitudinally with fols. 1-4.

(fol. 6) Prestissimo in F minor for piano [MWV U45], dated 19 Aug 1824, unpublished.

(fols. 7-8) Fuga in G minor for piano [MWV U46], dated 11 Sep 1824. Unpublished.

(fols. 9-10) Vivace in C minor for piano [MWV U52], dated 29 Jan 1825, with opening of another movement crossed out. Unpublished.

(fols. 11-15v) Op. 6, Sonata in E major for piano. First draft (H.d.m.), dated Berlin, 22 Mar 1826.

(fols. 17-18v) Op. 7 no. 4. First draft (H.d.m.), dated Berlin, 4 Jun 1826.

(fol. 18v) Op. 7 no. 1, dated Berlin, 6 Jun 1826.

(fols. 19-20) Fuga in E flat major for piano [MWV U57]. First draft (H.d.m.), dated 11 Sep 1826. Unpublished.

(fols. 21-5) Op. 17, Andante con variazioni in D major, for cello and piano. First draft (H. d. m.), dated 30 Jan 1829. Possibly printed from this manuscript by P. Mechetti. A cancelled version of var. 6 remains on fol. 26, the second leaf of what is now the final bifolium.
