Summary
Begins with the letter of 21 June 1780 (letter II, pp. 5-12 of the printed text), and ending with 9 Nov. 1780 (corresponding to 6 Nov., pp. 216-19). The entries for part of June and July (pp. 19-52 of the printed text) are lacking, except for one leaf, fol. 11 (pp. 37-8), and a note on fol. 10 refers to 'Book No.1' (not found). The entries for 30-31 Oct. and 3-8 Nov. are also lacking, and Beckford has noted (fol. 77v) 'Book No.3' (MS. Beckford f. 1) and (fol. 80) 'Vid: Book No 3 last page Novr. 3d then No.4'. There are several contemporary paginations of the manuscript. Three leaves, probably not kept here by Beckford, contain (fol. 83) rough notes identified by Boyd Alexander as notes for the 1780 tour, and (fols. 84-5) drafts of two letters, 29 and 30 June 1782, printed among the 'Additional letters' in Dreams, pp. 291-4.
