As for MS 59. The scribe writes passages of gloss in the margin in tiny script.

Decoration

As for MS 59. On fol. 1 is an initial and full border, the initial excised.

Binding

s. xvi in.: reverse-bevelled wooden boards with slightly projecting squares, recovered with calf, s. xix, blind-stamped perhaps in imitation of the original; sewn on seven bands; fols. i and 269 are paper blanks. The pattern consists of a frame divided into lozenges, all made up of plain fillets, each lozenge containing a Tudor rose. fols. ii and 268 were pastedowns in the same binding, which possibly originally had pinkish skin. There were two broad straps from shallow recesses in the front board to catches in the back, and brass chain-staples on the front board, from the foredge near the foot, and on the rear board, at the foredge near the head.

Provenance

MSS 59–64 are a set, made for Richard Scarborough (see MS 17), and bought from him by Thomas Bloxham (see MS 41), who bequeathed it to the College on his death in 1473. On fol. 4v, in the same elegant humanistica as the indexes in MS 60 &c., ‘Orate pro anima magistri Ricardi Scardeburgh sacre theologie professoris qui istos libros fieri fecit quos postea Magister Thomas Bloxham in medicinis doctor ab eodem emit et huic collegio dedit; orate igitur pro utroque’, followed by a table of contents in the same hand, showing that a ‘tabula distinctionum et questionum eiusdem operis’ is missing from the beginning.

Further down is ‘N. 5. 9. Art:’, s. xvii, canc. and replaced with ‘G. 3. 4 (LXIV)’, in red, and the College bookplate. ‘6’ is inked on the fore-edge.
